Airport Southwest

Due to the success of a new airline company, and a Southern California airport’s commitment to provide the necessary “space” for its planned growth, the airline chose this airport as one of its West Coast hubs. As a result of this choice, there would be an immediate need for a substantial number of additional parking spaces. Ampco System Parking was asked by the airport authority to plan the addition of the first 500 new spaces. Ampco’s management team came up with a striping plan that included the re-design of the rental car lots and a relocation of fencing to accommodate more passenger traffic and create more employee parking; furthermore, this would all be within the existing confines of the current airport parking areas. Unfortunately, due to the given time constraints and the approval process on the airport side, their team was unable to coordinate this plan. Therefore, the airport officials asked Ampco System Parking again to handle the entire process and to coordinate the removal and installation of several thousand feet of fencing, creating a new expanded visitor parking area and a newly designed employee parking area all while maintaining control over a 24-hour airport operation.

Due to the continued tremendous growth of the airline cited above, the parking demand increased and Ampco System was parking more than 1500 vehicles per day. The search for more parking had to go off-site to nearby commercial office property. Ampco again helped to develop the striping and traffic flow plan for the new location as well as implement a shuttle operation servicing both paid and unpaid parking in a mixed-use environment. As part of the plan, Ampco System Parking was responsible for coordinating the following

  • fencing, re-surfacing/seal and striping plan
  • the purchase of shuttle buses
  • the installation of an AVI system for the buses
  • installation of cashier booths
  • signage for this new 1500-space offsite park-and-ride lot for the airport

The airport, less than 90 days from the start date had a new 24-hour, park-and-ride facility that has seen capacities running nearly 100% which has had a significant fiscal impact for the city, airline, and its customers.
